VOCAL

DEVELOPMENT

As good as your voice may already be, it is capable of offering you even more. A collaboration with a vocal coach will allow you to remove any technical barriers that may be inhibiting your voices potential. There are so many adjustments a singer can make to break down what may hold them back. At the same time, minor changes in practice can emphasise and enhance the voice at any point in a singer’s career, whether they are a novice or a seasoned professional.

I see communication a key ingredient as we train your voice. It can provide perspective on how it was before, how it is now, and how we intend that it will be. From the first session I feel it is important to set goals for the short, medium and long term. You should feel at all times that the work we do is going somewhere definite. As your voice develops you should find more and more the freedom to express yourself as you have always wanted to.

VOCAL

HEALTH

As an experienced singer, I am all too familiar with the stress of waking up the morning after a concert with a tired voice and wondering how I will get my voice in shape for the next performance. For a professional singer nothing is more important than protecting your instrument so that you can depend on it show after show. If you are experiencing vocal fatigue or other vocal health problems there are changes that you can make which will have an immediately impact on your voice’s durability.

As singers we must consider the question: How do we perform to our maximum while not doing so in a way that jeopardises our vocal health for our next concert.

Learning to do this is directly linked to developing your vocal technique. Everything we learn in technical training is predicated on two things:

  1. Freeing your voice

  2. Doing so in a way that does no harm to its health

In addition, there are other factors we can control such as sleep, hydration, diet and lifestyle as well as refining our mic technique and adopting IEM use.

Any technical changes we adopt will always be prescribed in a way which gives pre-eminence to your vocal health – because if not what is the point right?

ARTISTIC & STYLE

DEVELOPMENT

Many singers feel that how their voice is now, is how it will be forever. This is not true. Unfortunately, your voice can deteriorate with age, lifestyle and wear and tear from the rigours of constant use (usually exacerbated by poor technique) among other factors.

On the flip side, it is true that the vast majority of voices do not reach their full potential without some kind of technical and artistic nurture.

When collaborating with singers I always aim to help them to imagine and redefine what their voice can be. For a singer to realise just how much potential they have is very empowering. I also find that in many instances the realisation that we can learn more, or reverse a decline can give birth to a new energy and enthusiasm for song writing, recording and performing.

PERFORMANCE

& STAGECRAFT

The most important step in the journey of voice training is feeling that you have more control of what your voice is doing. As your voice develops and you begin to reap the benefits of training you should feel more confident, creative, brave and excited with and by your voice. You should have less anxiety and spend less and less time wondering whether your voice will reach some of those notes that might have worried you before. Mornings you wake up wondering how on earth you can do that night’s show should be a thing of the past.
